Series EE

The Bureau of the Public Debt today announced a fixed rate of 1.200% for Series EE savings bonds issued from November 2009 through May 2010. Fixed rates for future issues will be set each May 1 and November 1. Interest accrues monthly and compounds semiannually. Bonds held less than five years are subject to a three-month interest penalty. EE bonds have an original maturity of 20 years, and an interest-bearing life of 30 years.

Series I

The earnings rate for Series I Savings Bonds is a combination of a fixed rate, which will apply for the life of the bond, and the inflation rate. An I Bond's composite earnings rate changes every six months after its issue date. Here's how the composite rate for I bonds issued November 2009 - May 2010 was set:

Fixed rate = 0.30%
Semiannual inflation rate = 3.06%
Composite rate = 3.36%
